Stewart Travels a Long Way to Finish 13th at Atlanta

Office Depot/Old Spice Driver Overcomes Numerous Obstacles in Kobalt Tools 500

A 13th-place finish has never been something Tony Stewart has crowed about, and his result in Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway was no different. Yet achieving this 13th-place finish was different, for Stewart had to come from the back of the 43-car field while managing his tires and dodging numerous late-race accidents. In fact, so much was packed into this race that it needed nearly 25 extra miles to complete, as it took two attempts at a green-white-checkered finish to finally end what turned out to be a 341-lap race.

“Long day,” said Stewart, who despite qualifying 15th had to start at the back of the 43-car field after his team changed engines following final practice on Saturday. “The tire deal kind of made the racing old school. You had to take care of your tires at the front of a run to make sure you still had tires at the end of the run. You could never run 100 percent. You really had to manage your equipment.”

Old Spice/Office Depot Driver Scores Second Straight Top-10, Rises to 11th in Points

Tony Stewart knocked down his second straight top-10 finish with a solid seventh-place effort in Sunday’s Shelby American NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The driver of the No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) led twice for seven laps in the 267-lap race.

“We ended up seventh, which is alright, but you always want more,” said Stewart, who finished ninth in last Sunday’s race in Fontana, Calif. “I struggled on restarts. It took a couple laps to get going, and when you lose so much time here on restarts like that, it makes for a long day.”

Old Spice/Office Depot Driver Logs Third Straight Top-10 Finish at Fontana

Tony Stewart put in a workmanlike performance in Sunday’s Auto Club 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., and the result was a solid ninth-place finish. It was Stewart’s third straight top-10 finish at the 2-mile oval and his first of the 2010 season.

“We got a top-10 out of it, but that was about it,” Stewart said. “We made gains on it all day, but we didn’t quite get exactly where we wanted to be. Still, we got better as the day went on.”

Strong Speedweeks Sours for Stewart in Daytona 500

Office Depot/Old Spice Driver Finishes Disappointing 22nd in Sprint Cup Season-Opener

Tony Stewart capped what had been a strong Daytona (Fla.) Speedweeks with a disappointing 22nd-place finish in the season-opening Daytona 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race Sunday at Daytona International Speedway.

The driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) came into the 52nd running of the Great American Race having won yesterday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series event and finishing second in his Gatorade Duel qualifying race on Thursday and ninth in the non-points Budweiser Shootout last Saturday. But an equally strong run in the Daytona 500 never materialized for Stewart as he grappled with a tight handling racecar throughout the 208-lap race, which was extended eight laps past its scheduled distance by a green-white-checkered finish.

Second in Duel Gives Stewart Sixth in 500

Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy Has Speed, Needs Handling

Tony Stewart manhandled his No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala to a strong second-place finish in his Gatorade Duel qualifying race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. He finished .014 of a second behind race winner Kasey Kahne, and in doing so, earned himself a solid, sixth-place starting spot in Sunday’s Daytona 500.

“We’ve got a little bit of work to do, but I’m proud of our guys,” Stewart said. “The first half of the race we weren’t very good, but we made a lot of ground on it the second half of the race.”

Q & A with Tony Stewart

You’ve said that you were a little nervous before the start of last season, not knowing exactly what to expect. What is your level of anticipation heading into this season, and is it any different than last year?

“I can promise you one thing: a year ago at this time, none of us knew what to expect and it was a big question mark. Obviously, getting the first year under our belt, there’s a lot more relaxation from my standpoint as far as my nerves are concerned. But I’m so extremely proud of the group we have here, the relationship that (crew chief) Darian (Grubb) and I have built over the last year, the relationship with (co-driver) Ryan (Newman) and (Newman’s crew chief) Tony Gibson and (competition director) Bobby Hutchens. I mean, this group is a really tight knit group to me and I’m very, very proud of what these guys have done over the last year. And, honestly, I’m expecting a great year. I feel like, with both of us being able to get in the Chase last year, that’s something that I expect both teams to do this year, and I feel like the changes we went through and the work that we did over the winter have prepared both of these teams to have a shot at running for a championship. So, versus last year at this time, saying that we just wanted to make the Chase and hopefully win some races, I feel like this year we have two teams that are legitimate contenders to not only make the Chase, but also have a shot at the championship.”

Stewart’s Chances of Winning Go South in South Florida

Tony Stewart’s chances of ending the 2009 season with a victory appeared quite good as he led twice for 43 laps early in Sunday’s season-ending Ford 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

However, the driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) saw his opportunity for victory go south at the South Florida track when he became involved in two separate incidents with Juan Pablo Montoya. The result of those incidents was some crinkled sheet metal and a disappointing 22nd-place finish.

Stewart Happy to See Phoenix in Rearview Mirror

Tony Stewart’s drive in Sunday’s Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500k NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway went from a possible top-10 performance to a disappointing 25th-place result when he was caught up in a multi-car accident on lap 171 of the 312-lap race.

It was triggered when Dale Earnhardt Jr., spun coming off turn four of the 1-mile oval, and Stewart’s No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala SS was among a gaggle of cars that were trapped in the ensuing melee. Nine cars in all were involved, with Stewart suffering significant damage to each corner of his racecar, including a busted front splitter that took three pit stops to repair.

Stewart Solid at Texas, Finishes Sixth

The good news for Tony Stewart during Sunday’s Dickies 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth was that he spent the majority of the 334-lap race comfortably in the top-10. The bad news for the driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) was that he had difficulty cracking the top-three en route to a sixth-place finish, which is his 23rd top-10 finish of 2009.

“We missed it a little bit today and it was one of those changes that we couldn’t do on a regular pit stop, so we just kind of had to work around it,” Stewart said. “I’m really proud of Darian (Grubb, crew chief) and these guys. They had good pit stops today and Darian and I kept talking about what we thought we could do to make the Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy better. I thought team-wise we had an awesome day working together and making gains at it. We never said, ‘Well, we just can’t get it any better.’ We kept throwing things at it to try to make it better.”

Crapshoot. Wild card. Those are the words most often used to describe racing at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, and Sunday’s AMP Energy 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the vast, 2.66-mile oval proved those descriptions correct.

Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), was one of the many drivers whose shot at a good finish went up in a cloud of smoke when he was caught up in the first of two multi-car accidents.
